Infrared Sauna FAQs

Everything you need to know about FAR infrared saunas, their unique benefits, and how they support whole-body wellness.

What is a FAR infrared sauna?

A FAR infrared sauna uses light waves, rather than hot air or steam, to heat your body directly. Unlike traditional saunas that warm the air around you, infrared saunas use the far end of the infrared spectrum—wavelengths between 8 and 11 microns—which are deeply absorbed by the body.

This allows you to experience a deeply therapeutic sweat at much lower temperatures, typically between 120–140°F, making sessions more comfortable while still delivering powerful benefits like detoxification, muscle recovery, and increased circulation.

How is a FAR infrared sauna different from other saunas?

Traditional saunas use high temperatures (often over 180°F) to heat the air, which then heats your skin. This can feel intense and may dry out your skin and sinuses.

Infrared saunas, on the other hand:

  • Penetrate the body up to 1.5 inches deep

  • Stimulate detoxification at the cellular level

  • Operate at lower, more tolerable temperatures

  • Promote a more gentle, prolonged sweat that begins before the air even feels hot

Over 90% of the infrared heat is absorbed by your tissues, compared to only about 20% of ambient heat in traditional saunas.

Is there scientific research behind infrared saunas?

Yes. FAR infrared therapy has been studied extensively over the past few decades. Key highlights:

  • NASA used infrared wavelengths in the 1980s to maintain cardiovascular health in astronauts.

  • Japanese and Chinese researchers have published numerous studies showing infrared therapy's benefits for circulation, detoxification, and chronic conditions.

  • Japan even formed an Infrared Society composed of medical professionals to support ongoing research and clinical application.

How hot does it get, and how long is a session?

Our infrared saunas operate at a maximum of 140°F, significantly cooler than traditional saunas that often exceed 190°F. Despite the lower temperature, most people find they sweat even more due to the deep, radiant heat.

Sessions are 40 minutes long. Most guests find this more than sufficient to experience a full-body detox and leave feeling refreshed and recharged.

How does infrared heat promote detoxification?

FAR infrared waves penetrate the body’s tissues, reaching the subcutaneous fat layer where many toxins are stored. This heat stimulates fat cells to release built-up toxins like:

  • Petrochemicals

  • Heavy metals (e.g., mercury)

  • Pesticides and other environmental pollutants

These toxins are then excreted through sweat and the sebaceous glands. This detoxifying effect helps improve circulation, support organ function, and relieve symptoms related to toxic overload.

How do people accumulate toxins, and how does this impact men and women differently?

Toxins enter our bodies from processed foods, industrial chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, household products, and personal care items. Over time, the body can become overwhelmed and store these toxins in fat tissue.

  • Men are often exposed through industrial work, car maintenance, lawn care chemicals, and alcohol use.

  • Women may accumulate toxins through beauty products, nail care, and cleaning agents. Due to a generally higher body fat percentage, women can store more toxins and may experience symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or brain fog more intensely.

Infrared sauna use can support the body’s natural detox processes and alleviate many of these symptoms over time.

Is infrared sauna therapy safe? Are there any side effects?

Yes, infrared saunas are completely safe. FAR infrared light is on the opposite end of the spectrum from ultraviolet (UV) light and does not pose the same risks. Unlike UV rays, which can damage the skin, infrared light is associated with healing, repair, and improved circulation.

Infrared saunas allow you to enjoy the health benefits of natural sunlight without the harmful UV exposure.

Can I become dehydrated? How much water should I drink?

Hydration is important. We recommend drinking water before, during, and after your session. While it's unlikely you'll become dehydrated during a 40-minute session, the deep sweat produced can be significant. Water is always available in our sauna suites to help keep you comfortable and safe.

How often can I use the infrared sauna?

Frequency depends on your health goals:

  • 1–2 times/week for maintenance and mild detox

  • 3 times/week during a deeper cleanse or wellness reset

  • Daily use is possible for some, depending on individual health needs and tolerance

Many guests begin with several sessions per week, then taper as they feel lighter, clearer, and more energized.

What conditions can infrared sauna therapy help with?

Skin Health
Conditions like psoriasis may improve as infrared heat encourages detox through sweat rather than through the skin itself. Increased circulation also helps tone, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin.

Weight Support
A single session can burn 300–600 calories by raising the core temperature, increasing circulation, and improving metabolism. Removing toxins that impair fat metabolism can also support weight balance.

Heart Health
Studies, including one from the Mayo Clinic, have shown significant improvement in patients with congestive heart failure after regular use of low-heat infrared therapy.

Arthritis & Joint Pain
Infrared heat penetrates deep into joints and muscles, easing stiffness, reducing inflammation, and enhancing tissue repair.

Asthma
Some individuals report fewer symptoms with regular use, likely due to improved detoxification and decreased chemical burden.

Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain
For those with high toxic loads, regular sessions can support liver and kidney function, decrease pain, and improve overall energy and mood.
